 Features of the design of the facades of Finnish houses

In suburban construction, houses built using Finnish technology are becoming increasingly popular. One of the "business cards" of Finnish houses, of course, are their facades, which give buildings a special appeal.

Features of buildings

The first and main feature of the exterior design of Finnish houses is a harmonious combination with the surrounding landscape, which is achieved through the use of natural materials. Other distinctive features of the facades of Finnish buildings are considered to be:

  • modesty;
  • conciseness;
  • Contrast color combination.

In addition to all this, there can be wide panoramic windows installed on the terrace. The latter is considered as an integral part of the house, as the attic floor.

Materials for facade finish

Initially, the construction in the style of traditional Finnish housing used natural timber. But the development of technologies in the construction industry has allowed to expand the range of materials suitable for these purposes.

Dry profiled timber

When building Finnish houses, preference is given to a bar made of coniferous trees such as pine, larch, cedar or spruce. If you have a choice, then it is better to buy cedar or larch cedar. The main advantage of this material is 100% environmental friendliness.

    In addition, the walls of properly dried timber have a number of advantages, including:

    • “Ability to breathe”;
    • the ability to maintain stable humidity and maintain optimal oxygen content in the air;
    • fairly good resistance to microorganisms (mold, rot);
    • a small percentage of shrinkage after construction;
    • aesthetics

    In addition, a dry profiled bar is convenient for installation and allows you to fit the elements to each other with minimal gaps. The latter circumstance reduces the cost of additional insulation of the house.

    Noting the advantages of the material, it is impossible not to mention its shortcomings.

    • The biggest minus of a natural dry bar is its flammability. Although today this problem is fairly easy to solve with the help of modern means for processing wood.
    • Another drawback is the difficulty of determining the degree of dryness of the tree. If the wood is not sufficiently dried, the quality of the construction can be significantly affected.

    Glued slats

    Modern alternative to dry profiled timber. It is obtained by gluing several wooden lamellae. From its natural counterpart, glued laminated wood is characterized by increased strength and much lower flammability. In addition, it practically does not shrink and is not exposed to fungi and bacteria.

    In this case, glued laminated timber, as well as dry profiled, is considered an environmentally friendly product. However, it is still impossible to talk about 100% environmental cleanliness, as in the process of its manufacture, glue compositions are used (some unscrupulous manufacturers may use far from safe glue). An additional disadvantage of glued material is considered by many to be a higher cost compared to a conventional bar.

    OSB plates

    This material is considered the most popular in the construction of modern Finnish houses. Oriented particle boards are made of wood chips (chips) up to 15 cm long. In the production process, the wood particles are mixed with synthetic resins and pressed under high pressure and at high temperatures. Each OSB plate consists of several layers, in each of which shavings are located in a certain direction.

    Wooden facades from this material possess a number of positive properties:

    • strength;
    • fire safety;
    • small weight;
    • ease of installation;
    • resistance to decay and mold.

    At the same time, the cost of the plates is quite affordable to the wide consumer.

    The disadvantages of the material include the ability of plates to absorb moisture and the use in their manufacture of harmful substances. However, here it is necessary to take into account that the moisture resistance of OSB-plates depends on the brand. The range has panels designed for use outside the house, having increased hydrophobicity.

    As for harmful substances, bona fide manufacturers have long excluded dangerous components from production.To minimize the risk of buying poor-quality material, you must read the certificate for the goods.

    Other options

    In addition to wood, other natural materials, stone, are widely used in the decoration of Finnish houses. Masonry of rubble stone of irregular shape also helps to make houses appear part of the natural landscape. For the greatest effect, a stone of various sizes and shades is used.

    Stone and wood are perfectly combined with each other, which is also used in the design of facades of houses in the Finnish technique. Stone lay out part of the foundation, pile supports, steps. Wood is used for everything else.

    At present, other materials are also actively used for finishing Finnish houses.

    • Siding. To save the "zest" of the building is to use wood, not plastic panels.
    • Fiber cement facade panels. Despite the fact that it is a synthetic material, it is distinguished by high environmental safety. In addition, modern technology allows us to give it a variety of textures, with maximum accuracy mimicking wood or masonry.
    • Facing brick. A unique and versatile finishing material that allows you to create an unusual design of the house, while protecting the walls from the negative effects of external factors.

    Another material that allows you to create a unique look of your home is decorative plaster. It can be used in combination with other elements.

    Half-timbered technology

    In the exterior of many European houses, the attention is paid to the elements of the fachwerk equipment - the visible horizontal, vertical and diagonal parts of the building frame. Previously, the elements of the supporting structure were left in sight in order to save: the builders did not see the point in the over-expenditure of building materials in order to “hide” the racks.

    Today, half-timbered houses perform a decorative function and are often used in the exterior of Finnish houses made of OSB-slabs.

    Modern half-timbered houses are wooden boards mounted on top of wall panels along the power lines of the framework. Most often the installation uses the elements “dovetail”, “St. Andrew’s Cross”, Vinkels.

    Painting and decorating

    Installing timber, OSB-panels and correctly using the fachwerk technique is not all.The original design of the Finnish house requires painting the facade in a certain color range.

    For painting walls use:

    • covering enamel;
    • tinting impregnation;
    • stain

    When choosing a color, it is taken into account that the shade of the finish should contrast with the main background of the wall panels. But this contrast should be harmonious. For example, a combination of white with dark brown, saturated green or burgundy is well suited for the facade of a Finnish house. In some cases, the walls are covered with transparent enamel, especially if they are made of natural or glued timber.

    To complement the design of the facade and make the house truly "Finnish" will help decorative elements in the form of beautiful canopies over the entrance door, a balcony in the attic, window blinds, umbrellas, climbing plants and various lamps.
