How to make a door with your own hands?

Doors - one of the important elements of the interior, although they are not paid as much attention as furniture. But with the help of the door you can add and diversify the decor of the room, create comfort, an atmosphere of security and a zone of personal space, prevent the penetration of unpleasant odors, cold and moisture and much more. More and more owners of houses and apartments prefer to make door designs with their own hands. They can be understood, because the hand-made product has a number of significant advantages over the factory counterparts.

Advantages and disadvantages

The reasons for which the owner of the living area there is a desire to make interior doors with their own hands, can be many.

  • By taking on the work independently, a person can be absolutely sure of the quality of the materials used for the product.
  • He becomes the owner of a unique interior or front door, which fits perfectly into the decor of the room and the doorway itself.
  • It significantly saves money, because most models in furniture stores and specialty stores go on sale with an exorbitant surcharge from intermediaries.

But at the same time, despite all these positive aspects of handicrafts, it is important to understand that it is necessary to put a lot of effort so that the end result is a reliable, original and eye-pleasing interroom door that can serve its creator for many years. And for this you first need to learn all the secret sides of the manufacture of interior doors with their own hands.

Species

Different door designs can be divided into several groups, based on certain product characteristics.

According to the design of the door are:

  • Paneled, this type of door consists of several components (base or frame, panels);
  • Shield, they include one element.

According to the material used for the manufacture of:

  • wooden;
  • fibreboard;
  • plastic;
  • laminated;
  • metal;
  • glass

By way of opening:

  • swing;
  • sliding;
  • folding;
  • radial.

By type of lock:

  • rotary;
  • suvaldnye;
  • granary;
  • smartlock.

Choosing a material

In order to choose the right material, you must first determine the type of product, as well as its purpose.

Mainly for the manufacture of door structures use:

  • various tree species (pine, oak, alder, larch, beech, birch, ash and others);
  • fibreboard (chipboard, chipboard, MDF);
  • plastic;
  • glass;
  • metal;
  • accessories from various materials: from wood to forged elements.

Quality material selected for the manufacture of doors is a guarantee that the product will be of high quality and will last for a long time and correctly.

More than 50% of the reliability of the door depends on the selected material; everything else is made up of the manufacturer’s ability to handle this material and the tools it will use for this.

Step-by-step instruction

Before proceeding to the manufacture of the door, it is necessary to expend a lot of paper and, first, create a drawing with all dimensions, and, second, make a list of the necessary materials and tools.

Only after a well-planned sequence of actions can you start the work itself, otherwise there is a risk of missing something important or incorrectly calculated.

From the tools you will need:

  • various mills for a manual milling cutter and the machine itself;
  • saw;
  • Bulgarian;
  • drill and screwdriver;
  • measuring instruments;
  • screwdrivers and chisels;
  • hammer and more.

The plan of work and production depends on what type of interior door was chosen.

It will consist of several steps:

  • doorway measurement;
  • cutting out the necessary elements of the door structure;
  • assembly of the door frame and door leaf;
  • determination of the location of fittings and fasteners;
  • processing and dressing;
  • installation;
  • installation dobori and cashing.

How to mount an accordion door?

Folding doors are becoming increasingly popular, and it is to them that homeowners give more and more preferences. Many people doubt that it is possible to make hinged doors on rollers with their own hands. The seemingly non-standard and complex structure is actually very simple in its design and manufacture.The accordions consist of several narrow door panels, fastened together with the help of hinges, and this design moves along guide rails on rollers or carriages made of rubberized plastic.

The advantage of these products lies in the rational consumption of space, and the disadvantage is the poor sound insulation and the absence of a decent barrier to odors.

Let us turn to the most important thing - the hand-made production of a hanging folding door. It is necessary to begin the process by selecting the base material for the structure. The harmonicas are unpretentious in the assembly, therefore practically any material will be suitable for their manufacture, the main thing is that it should not be heavy or massive.

The large weight of the cloths can create additional difficulties in the manufacture, for example, installation of additional guide rails will be required both from above and below.

The most suitable materials for the manufacture of accordions are wood, chipboard or MDF panels, as well as plastic. As for fasteners and accessories for folding doors, everything is quite simple here - the necessary elements can be easily purchased in specialized stores.You will need rails, carriages or rollers, hinges or hinges, mounting plates, as well as screws and bolts, the same applies to door handles and locks.

Only it is worth considering that the usual fittings will not work for folding products, the locks must necessarily be designed for accordion doors, and the handles are lightweight and closest to the surface of the canvas, so as not to hinder the movement of the structure.

From the tools you will need:

  • jigsaw;
  • drill with various nozzles;
  • construction glue;
  • measuring devices - tape measure, level and metal ruler;
  • pencil.

The most important thing in making an accordion is correctly made calculations and measurements in the project. Doors-accordion, folding according to the type of musical instrument of the same name, can consist of any number of canvases, and also have one, two or more sash, depending on the doorway. And the canvases can move from one edge to another, and from the door frame to the center point of the opening.

After making the calculations, you can start cutting out the door leafs.The sawn parts of the future door construction for aesthetics and safety are treated with emery paper, then wiped with a dry cloth and covered at the edges with protective edges of PVC panels with building glue. But this must be done if the product is made of wood or laminated chipboard and MDF, glass and plastic cloths do not require this treatment.

The next step is marking the location of fasteners and accessories, as well as drilling these holes. Each sash should have its own carriage or roller and at least three hinges or hinges, for more massive structures this number should be increased.

It is necessary to assemble the door leaf only in a horizontal position, otherwise it may be deformed or displaced.

Folding doors are made simply - you just need to mount the guide rail in the ceiling or in the floor and ceiling to create additional security during the operation of the product and its durability. Extreme accordion canvases are not equipped with hinges, since on one side there will be a fastening system for the door jamb, and on the other side there will be a handle or a lock.The harmonica is attached to the door jamb with the help of axial pins, which must be at least two pieces: top and bottom. Sliding doors are inserted into them into special grooves that are located on the floor and ceiling.

Do-it-yourself-made accordion doors are a great solution for saving not only space, but also your own funds. Due to the simplicity of this design, a wide space of thoughts and fantasies opens up to create unusual models that can decorate any interior.

The door-accordion can serve not only as an interior door, but also as a partition, a door-screen, and if the walls are made of plasterboard, then it is possible to make a sliding structure into the wall during additional installation work.

Single plywood doors

Another simple way to make the door yourself is to choose a material such as plywood for its manufacture. This product can be of two types: designs consisting of one layer and frame products from two layers of plywood. Both types have their own advantages and features of manufacturing. Consider them in more detail separately:

Single layer construction

As the name implies, this type of construction consists of a sheet of plywood, which is necessarily reinforced with wood slats from two sides. It turns out quite a light and easy to manufacture product that does not require special material and physical costs for its creation.

Frame doors

This type of construction, in turn, consists of two sheets of plywood, between which there are either stiffeners or insulation. This door allows you to make an additional level of sound insulation, and also it retains heat well in the room.

It is a little more difficult to make a frame door than an ordinary single-layer door, but, nevertheless, it is up to anyone, even without experience, the main thing is to be patient and follow the instructions clearly.

Having decided on the choice of plywood door design, the owner can begin to create a project and measure the parameters of the doorway to create a drawing of the future door and calculate the necessary amount of materials. After all the manipulations with the measuring tape, tape measure and level are made, you can safely arm yourself with a shopping list and go to the hardware store.

For plywood doors will require:

  • sheet (s) of first or second grade plywood;
  • wooden slats from 10 to 15 cm wide;
  • insulation, for example, glass wool (required only for a frame door);
  • accessories set.

Manufacturing Tools:

  • drill;
  • jigsaw;
  • screwdriver;
  • glue;
  • sandpaper;
  • screwdriver;
  • measuring instruments and pencil.

A single-layer door is made according to a simple scheme:

  • the sheet of plywood is cut by the parameters of the doorway;
  • wooden slats are mounted on glue or with screws on both sides of the sheet;
  • cut holes for hardware;
  • the finished product is treated with sandpaper and puttyed, then either painted or varnished;
  • elements of accessories are established.

The process of creating frame doors is more complicated, but the result exceeds expectations in quality and reliability of the design.

The manufacturing scheme is as follows:

  • the frame of the door is made of wooden slats or bars, between them they are fastened either with glue or screws;
  • then, by analogy with a single-layer door, two sheets of plywood are cut out, one of which is attached to the frame immediately with screws;
  • after insulation;
  • the second sheet of plywood is attached to the frame;
  • the next step is marking and drilling holes for fittings, at this stage a locking mechanism of the lock is installed, if the door is an entrance door, not an interroom one;
  • the product is polished, processed by putty, painted or varnished;
  • the accessories are established.

We do of lining

Independently to make a door from lining more difficult, than from plywood as work with drawings becomes much more complicated, and elements becomes much more. Products from lining are very popular in country houses and baths. Due to its properties, wood retains moisture well and retains heat, but only with proper processing.

For the manufacture of the door construction of the lining will require tools:

  • electric drill;
  • saw or jigsaw;
  • measuring devices - level, tape measure;
  • primer;
  • hammer.

Materials:

  • wooden boards;
  • fittings and fasteners.

Agree, the list is quite short and consists mainly of improvised means, and all its components can be easily found at home. The creation of the door, as always, begins with the doorframe and measurements of all quantities.Since wood is a rather heavy material, the box must comply with these parameters and be very durable. If the door frame is weak, then it is recommended to reinforce it with a wooden bar up to 10 cm thick. After creating the door frame, you can proceed to manufacturing the door itself.

The boards are cut into two elements, which should become the front part of the door, their length should be the required height of the door structure, say, 180 cm. The corresponding holes are cut on the boards for fastening other elements of the structure by analogy with the designer. Then you can proceed to the manufacture of horizontal structural elements, there may be several, but certainly not less than two. These parts are inserted into the grooves of the vertical elements and secured with nails.

After the design basis has been created, it is possible to start filling it up; at least 40 boards are cut for this, provided they are horizontal. These elements also need to be inserted into the grooves of the main structure and fastened with nails. After it is cut openings for fittings,if necessary, the door is covered with specialized compositions, such as a primer, varnished, decorated and only after that all fittings and fixing elements are fastened, and hinges are inserted.

In addition to the classic door construction of the wall paneling, you can make sliding doors, with a minimum of strength, skills and material costs. To begin with, it is necessary to create the basis of the sliding structure, for this purpose boards with a section of 10x2 cm are used, respectively, the size of the structure depends entirely on the parameters of the door opening. After the frame is manufactured, the remaining elements are prepared. For the door leaf, the wall paneling is cut to the appropriate parameters and glued together, the boards are also attached to the bottom and top, and it is recommended to attach a horizontal crossbar to the front side of the door, or arrange it diagonally, this will add additional strength to the structure and also serve as a decorative element. The whole structure is fixed with screws, including fasteners, and is put on the main frame, equipped with guides and rollers, which allow the door leaf to move.

Important: before starting work with wood, it is necessary to dry it, otherwise the installation of these elements will lead to the deformation of the main structure, as well as chips and cracks when trying to drill or cut it.

Before painting the wood cloth must be covered with a primer, it can also be painted only after drying.

Filed mechanical models

It is not as easy to make a paneled door as it seems, but it is quite possible if you are guided by the prompts of professionals and follow a clearly described plan.

You also need to stock up on the necessary tools and materials:

  • jigsaw or hacksaw for cutting wood;
  • chisel;
  • measuring instruments and pencil;
  • screwdriver;
  • emery paper of several types with different surfaces;
  • fittings and fasteners;
  • wood - bars from 5 cm wide;
  • sheets of plywood, chipboard, laminated chipboard or MDF;
  • glass;
  • glue and wood treatment products.

For the manufacture of the door it is better to choose wood with a high level of strength and moisture resistance, most often it is oak, pine or ash. Additional elements of the door - panels can be made of MDF or chipboard panels, but also suitable glass or stained glass.

Work on the door construction begins with the work of measurement and the creation of a sketch; it is better for beginners in the manufacture of this type of products to start with a simplified door with five to six panels. Taking into account all the parameters and quantities, and after creating the door frame, the basis for the door is made - 2 vertical and 2 horizontal elements, as well as several separators of the panels, which will also increase the strength of the product.

All elements are fastened with the help of grooves, which can additionally be treated with glue for a higher level of fixation and strength of all elements.

Then you can start making the panels; this is one of the simplest tasks; you just need to cut a part of the required size from the material chosen for the panel. Then they are attached to the main structure.

After the door is processed with special compositions, all the joints are hidden by spars, then the product is decorated, and then it becomes ready for installation.

How to make the door frame yourself?

The door frame is the basis of the door structure, it is a guarantee of its quality and strength, long service life, as well as an attractive appearance.It is with the preparation of the doorway that all the work on the manufacture of the door begins - this is the carrier canvas of the entire product, as well as the place to install the lock plate. It is quite simple to make the door frame, but only if you are responsible for this stage of production, you can finally get a good result and a door that will fulfill its direct responsibilities. The manufacturing scheme does not contain anything complicated.

Most often, the same materials are used to make the box as for the creation of the door leaf itself: wood, MDF or metal. The highest performance belongs, of course, wood.

For the box, you can use any wood species, but it is important to consider its properties.

Consider an example. Most often for door boxes used pine. This is a material with a democratic cost, which corresponds to quality, but pine is absolutely unacceptable for entrance doors, as it has such properties as softness and elasticity: such a product will not be able to have a high level of durability and, therefore, to perform its direct functions.Oak is better suited for entrance doors, but pine is the perfect solution for interior designs.

Important: with regard to MDF and metal, here it is worth considering a few facts. MDF is an attractive, inexpensive material, but its level of strength is very low.

Metal is a durable and high-quality alloy, which at the same time does not look very aesthetically pleasing.

Thus, MDF-plates - the lot of interior doors, and metal - entrance. But if it is easy to work with wood fiber, metal constructions require sturdy skills of a welder.

Traditionally, the manufacture of the doorframe begins with careful measuring manipulations, which should be carried out after the dismantling of the old structure. It is necessary to measure the sides of the doorway, as well as the threshold and top of the opening, then calculate the required amount of material. The width of the door frame is directly proportional to the width of the walls.

The next stage is cutting the material and connecting the structure. It is extremely important to determine the type of connection. Experts prefer the grooving method, it is considered the most reliable, but it is quite difficult to cut all the grooves on your own.

For beginners in this case, there is another way to connect the door frame - diagonal.

The upper edges of the vertical and horizontal elements are cut at an angle of 45 degrees, thereby forming diagonal joints of the structure.

It is very important not to make a mistake with an angle of one degree, otherwise the construction will turn out to be unsafe in operation and deformed.

If all measurements are made correctly, then you can proceed to the collection of construction and its processing, and then to the installation. This process is quite simple, but at the final stages some nuances may arise.

At installation of a door box it is necessary:

  • make sure that the box meets the parameters of the door;
  • mark all areas where hinges or other fasteners will be located;
  • mount the box in the doorway, adjusting all values with a plumb and level;
  • fix the position of the door with a peg or slats;
  • bolt the structure;
  • fill the gap with foam.

In most cases at this stage the installation of the doorframe ends, but this is the practical part, we should not forget about aesthetics.It is also necessary to hide the joints between the doorway and the box, as well as take care to close the empty spaces that may well arise if the owner wanted to change the geometry of the doorway and reduce it.

How to do and draws?

So, if there is such a nuance, as the discrepancy between the parameters of the doorway and the box in width or height, you need to fix it. This can be done quite simply with the installation of the so-called dobor, which are easily made independently of any materials with minimal time and effort.

In fact, additional posts are ordinary self-made strips covering the open section of the wall, but also they come in several forms:

  • a plank that does not have a lined edge, which is hidden later with the help of cashing;
  • lined plank;
  • combined dobore, which has protrusions and recesses for matching with other elements of the doorway, to make it is not so easy.

As already mentioned, any material can be suitable for dobori, it’s important only its textured and color combination with the box and the main door structure,otherwise, the appearance of the door may be damaged.

The easiest way to do it yourself is wood.

Consider the scheme of their creation:

  • measurement of areas that need to be hidden;
  • selection of suitable materials for the parameters;
  • adjusting the slats to the required values;
  • wood polishing;
  • staining in the color of the door frame, varnishing to protect against moisture in two layers;
  • installation additional work.

It is necessary to begin the installation of the planks from the upper horizontal element, then the remaining elements of the additional plank are fitted and fixed. The fastening elements can be liquid nails or screws, or special grooves of combined doborok.

But in order to give a complete and complete look to the door structure, it may be necessary to install a decorative cashing, it hides all the joints and flaws of the doorway and the door itself, and also increases the level of insulation.

Independently, you can make public elements and canopies of wood, following the same rules as in the manufacture of dobori - a combination of colors and textures.

To make a cash card with your own hands:

  • make measurements;
  • cut elements according to the parameters of the door design;
  • sanded materials;
  • process wood with a protective compound;
  • make assembly and installation.

The cashing is fastened in the same way as dobora, with the help of screws or liquid nails.

How to weld the door yourself?

The process of making steel doors is much more laborious and complex than the process of making wood products.

Firstly, this will require other tools, which are not always so easy to find, and, secondly, it is much easier to work with wood than with metal.

Also, steel doors are rarely seen as interior doors, except in industrial premises, most often metal doors are installed as entrance doors, and therefore they must be particularly durable and reliable in construction, and the owner will need to take care of a reliable lock.

From tools for the manufacture of steel doors will need:

  • welding machine;
  • welding table;
  • grinding machine, necessarily angular and with a nozzle for working with metal;
  • screwdrivers;
  • screwdriver and electric drill with various nozzles;
  • carob keys.

From the materials required:

  • corners from a metal profile for a door box or a pipe with square section;
  • metal leaf for the front door with a thickness of 2 mm;
  • hinges;
  • fittings, including fasteners;
  • if necessary - finishing material in the form of MDF panels, veneer and more.

After all the necessary will be ready, you need to make measurements of the doorway, it is important to count the dimensions on a solid basis, for example, a brick wall, but not from the finishing plaster, which at any time during installation can crumble.

Also, when measuring the width and height there may be a difference in the values, in which case you need to choose the most minimal parameters.

After all measurements have been made, you must subtract 2 cm on each side in order to be able to adjust the position of the box and the door structure itself during installation.

We now turn to the most crucial stage - the manufacture of the box and the door structure. First of all, they start work on the box for the doorway, for this purpose they lay out the profile on the welding table and cut it according to previously measured measurements. Then the obtained box details are once again applied to each other on the welding table and the measurements are verified, as well as the degree of the corners formed, all of which must be straight.

Only after repeated verification of all measurements, you can begin to weld the doorframe.

At this stage, you can cut holes for the bolt mechanism using a grinder.

The next step is the door leaf. To measure it is quite simple - you need to subtract 0.5 cm from each size of the door frame, this gap will allow the door to open and close freely. After that you can start welding the frame from metal corners, not forgetting about additional stiffeners, making grid welding of metal pipes.

One of the final stages is the installation of the door leaf. Everything is quite simple and identical to the previous stages. Measurements are made with a permissible increase in dimensions of 1 cm from all sides, except the one where the door hinges are located, there is a permissible value of 0.5 cm. Then the sheet must be welded securely and smoothly to the door frame and grinded using a grinder.

The final touches are the work on the slits for the lock, eye and handles, as well as the installation of fittings and cladding. And, of course, the welding of door hinges.

How to warm?

If the owner himself was able to make repairs in the apartment with his own hands and assemble the door structure, it would be a matter of a couple of minutes to insulate it.Basically, you only need to warm the entrance doors or those products that open onto a balcony.

With the help of additional insulation, you can increase the ability of the structure to retain heat, to protect from drafts and cold, as well as unwanted sounds and smells (relevant for kitchen doors).

Insulation, though the process is simple, but contains several steps:

  • installation of insulation materials around the perimeter of the door frame;
  • covering up the gaps between the frame and the door leaf;
  • if necessary, sealing fittings, locks and other elements;
  • insulation of the door structure, including the canvas.

For insulation required:

  • material for warming (foam rubber, synthetic winterizer and another);
  • compaction / sealing material;
  • upholstery for door leaf (eco leather or polycarbonate, wood panels);
  • screwdriver;
  • polyurethane foam;
  • measuring instruments and scissors;
  • construction stapler.

Before you start work, you need to decide on the materials for insulation and sealing, and their number, because the door structure must first be investigated in detail for the presence of gaps, and measure the leaf sashes for upholstery material.Only then can you proceed with the installation of the seal. It is mounted either on the adhesive tape or on the brackets, and the second option is much more reliable. The next step is the upholstery of the door leaf; this can be done both from the front side of the door and from the back. The owner determines the color and type of mounting independently.

It is only important to carefully cut all the holes for fittings, lock and door peephole.

If we are talking about the weatherization of a metal door, then the course of work will be slightly different. Such doors can be easily insulated from the inside with expanded polystyrene and other synthetic materials. The canvas is fastened in any way between the partitions of the main frame, then the metal base is welded back and a warm entrance door is obtained with additional noise and heat insulation.

Decor and finishes

There are a large number of ways to decorate and trim doorways and structures that are able to give the product a unique and stylish appearance, ideally combined with the interior of the room.

Consider the basic ways to create interior and entrance doors:

  • painting;
  • varnish coating;
  • pasting with wallpaper, photo wallpaper or cloth;
  • applying liquid wallpaper;
  • inlaying with mirror surfaces (glass, mirror, acrylic and others);
  • wear out or make vintage decoupage;
  • drawing frescos, patterns and various decorative elements.

You can also glue the door leaf with beads, make the interior trim with laminate flooring and so on.
