Enamel primer rust: types and review of manufacturers

Unique coatings - primer-enamels, are able to protect and restore metal products from rust, in particular, significantly prolong the life of car surfaces, especially where the climate with pronounced seasons of the year, unstable weather and abundant precipitation prevail.

Purpose

Anti-corrosive enamel primers are used to create a protective and decorative layer on a clean or rust-damaged metal area. They create protection from the effects of damp, fresh and salt water, rain, snow, hail, and are therefore well suited for new or previously painted metal fences and roofs, doors and gates, fencing and gratings,various technical and decorative products, equipment and structures in and outside the premises, car parts and boats.

Species

There is a whole range of protective paint products. For example, alkyd-urethane enamels, often used for outdoor coating of concrete, metal and wood. A wide range of applications for epoxy enamel, distinguished by durability and resistance to atmospheric phenomena - from flooring to painting exterior walls and roofs. Polyurethane enamel is known for its use for painting concrete and wooden floors. Alkyd or acrylic enamel is famous for its types and versatility.

A variety of anti-corrosive enamel primers are used to protect the metal from rust, have a complex chemical composition and are divided into:

  • insulating;
  • passivating;
  • transformative;
  • phosphating two-component;
  • protectors;
  • inhibitory.

Insulating priming enamel forms a layer that protects the metal from moisture and oxygen. It has high heat resistance and is good for structures that are in the open air or in water.Passivating can slow down the corrosion process and is well suited for conditions with high humidity. Converters, including orthophosphoric acid, interacting with rust, form a reliable phosphate film and partially restore the metal. Phosphating two-component, in addition to phosphoric acid containing and passivating substances, have excellent adhesion (adhesion) to the surface and are suitable for processing galvanized metals.

The protectors are supplied with metal particles, when dry they form a durable metallized coating, they are distinguished by their economical consumption and are recommended for processing products that come into contact with water. Inhibitors are characterized by deep adhesion to damaged metal, high anti-corrosion properties, increased consumption and are well suited for decorative painting.

According to their composition, many of the above-mentioned means belong to the type of the so-called primer-enamels 3 in 1, which will be discussed below.

Composition and technical characteristics

Some primer enamels compare favorably with others in ease of use due to their complexity. They contain, in addition to solvents, various pigments and fillers, three main groups of substances:

  • rust converters;
  • primer with anti-corrosive effect;
  • outer decorative layer.

Therefore, these paints are called primer enamels 3 in 1. And due to the homogeneous and unique consistency, instead of three successively applied layers, only one is required. The owner of enamel 3 in 1 is exempt from the cost of primers and fillers. Some of their other attractive features can also be noted:

  • heat resistance of the finished layer (withstands a range from + 100 ° С to -40 ° С);
  • evenness of the treated surface;
  • immunity of the coating to inorganic and organic substances (mineral oils, weak solutions of salts, acids and alkalis, alcohols, etc.);
  • no need for thorough preparation of the painted surface (complete removal of rust is not required);
  • relatively low consumption and good hiding power (the ability to block the color of the surface);
  • fast drying (within about two hours) and durability of the coating (up to 7 years - outdoors, up to 10 years - indoors).

The consumption of such enamels is 80-120 ml / m2 (single layer). The thickness of one layer is about 20-25 microns (0.02-0.025 mm). On seven square meters of surface there is approximately a kilogram of composition. Externally, the coating is a thin continuous and uniform uniformly colored film. As suitable for painting surfaces are products and surfaces of stainless steel, cast iron, some non-ferrous metals, such as aluminum, copper and zinc.

In the composition of paints on rust, among other elements, various fillers can be represented. In some enamel protectors, metal particles can be used to create strength and impart a certain texture to the final coating. For example, the so-called hammer paint is known for rust, which contains aluminum flakes, which create a texture on drying, resembling the effect of hand hammering on sheet metal.

Manufacturers Overview

In Russia, the production of paints and household products is quite common. In particular, among the suppliers of primer enamels 3 in 1 stand out:

  • St. Petersburg stamp Novbythim. Among the products of the company there is a quick-drying passivating primer-enamel on rust 3 in 1. It is used to protect and paint untouched and damaged by rust metal surfaces. It has transforming properties, anti-corrosion primer and decorative enamel, which simplifies the process of painting. It is widely used for painting large products with a complex structure.
  • Moscow company NPO Krasko LLC offers quick-drying inhibiting impact-resistant semi-matt enamel on rust 3 in 1 “Fast Metro” with single-layer protection, as well as polyurethane “Polyuretol” - chemically, moisture-and frost-resistant, glossy tread-high-strength soil-enamel 3 in 1 with “micro-titanium” effect (the presence of titanium particles in the paint creates a significant resistance of the created surface to all kinds of physical effects).
  • Kaluga Paint and Varnish Plant LLC manufactures transforming enamel primer over rust PF-100. Made on the basis of alkyd-urethane varnish, it has the properties of enamel, rust converter and primer.

The two-layer coating is capable of long-term demonstration of excellent protective and decorativeproperties in a changing continental climate.

  • Novosibirsk company "LKM technology" Pental Amor is a 2-in-1 enamel (external finishing enamel in combination with an anti-corrosive primer) used for metal surfaces inside and outside the premises, as well as converting primer-enamel on rust 3 in 1 Corroded, which is intended for repair painting of various objects (bridge spans, hangars, power transmission line poles), products with a complex structure (curly fences), facilities used in agriculture.
  • FKP "Perm powder plant" produces in a diverse color palette heat-resistant primer-enamel "Acromet", which has good adhesion to the material being processed, combines the capabilities of the primer and the final coating with excellent external parameters and provides reliable protection of the coating against external natural influences.
  • CJSC Alp Enamel (Moscow region) offers a quick-drying, weather-resistant and chemically stable 3-in-1 enamel Severon, designed for use in areas with harsh climate and unstable weather.
  • Company "Yaroslavl paints" creates a primer-enamel rust 3 in 1 "Special Forces" with a high resistance to the atmosphere in the industrial zone, used to transform and paint bulky structures with a complex structure, on which the dismantling of the old coating is difficult (fencing, gratings, bridge structures), as well as for restoration painting of parts of passenger cars (bottoms and wings).
  • Yaroslavl company Russian Paints OJSC produces primer-enamel "Prodecor", which is designed for painting of factory buildings, products of complex construction, on which the cleaning of the old coating is difficult, as well as during repair painting.
  • An interesting hammer paint on rust is the Polish brand. Hammerite. This paint protector contains metal particles, which, when dried, create a pattern with the effect of hammer embossing on iron, which has a nacreous shade.

Application tips

It should be noted that the effective use of primer enamels on rust is suitable only for relatively small damaged areas. For large plots, more thorough restoration work is needed.

To choose the enamel correctly, it is reasonable to consider the following points:

  • surface material (for example, for galvanized metal, it is preferable to choose phosphatizing two-component enamels);
  • the nature of the surface (if the surface is of a complex configuration, then enamel should be taken with high adhesion; in the case of heavily damaged surface rust, remember that the enamel consumption will increase; if there are difficulties in removing old paint, then it is useful to take Spetsnaz enamel);
  • air humidity (in a humid climate, insulating or passivating enamels should be used);
  • air temperature (for example, in conditions of low temperature it is better to use quick-drying compounds);
  • the nature of the product's use (if, for example, it experiences mechanical effects, then enamels-protectors of the “Polyuretol” type are better suited);
  • decorative products (desired color, for example, black for the grille; matte or glossy shine of the corresponding enamel).

Before applying the enamel is better to stir, so that all its components are distributed evenly. If the consistency seems to be too viscous, then various solvents can be used to dilute the composition, for example, xylene. It is necessary to prepare the treated surface, namely:

  • clean it from dust or wash it with water from dirt;
  • dry in order to achieve full adhesion with enamel and in order to avoid peeling of the coating;
  • in case of oil contamination, degrease the surface, especially the places damaged by corrosion, for example, white spirit (and after drying);
  • remove any cracked coating;
  • if it has already been coated with varnishes or paints, it should be cleaned with a fine abrasive tool (for example, sandpaper) to a matte surface.

If there is rust, then it is necessary to remove only its loose part, for example, with a metal brush or spatula. The thickness of the remaining dense rust should not be thicker than 100 microns. Otherwise, there is a chance that the painting will be poor quality.

It is necessary to pay attention to the fact that the imposition of soil-enamel is unacceptable on the surface, which was previously treated with nitrocellulose means, for example, nitrolacom. Then the old coating may swell. If in doubt, you can test it: apply a little enamel evenly on a small area and wait an hour. If the surface has not changed, you can continue painting.If swelling has occurred, it is necessary to remove the spoiled coating with the help of special washes for paint and varnish products.

Thus, when working with 3-in-1 enamel enamels, it is not necessary to remove all old paint and rust from the surface. The primer is also not needed - it is already contained in enamel.

For a more efficient and reliable painting it is necessary to observe some indicators. The relative air humidity during dyeing should be about 70%, and the air temperature should be in the range of -10 ° C to + 30 ° C.

Storage and transportation of enamel can be carried out at temperatures below 0 ° C, always in carefully closed containers, away from children, the sun and heated appliances.

Application is possible in various ways and tools: you can act with a brush, use a roller, dip a part into the composition, coat the product with a spray. Rubber gloves should be worn to protect your hands. It is better to use wide and thick brushes (this will allow to evenly distribute the composition), made from natural lint (this will save the brush from aggressive paint substances). When spraying, use a metal spray gun without plastic parts that may suffer from enamel anti-corrosion substances.Spraying by aerosol is beneficial when the surface is very small in size.

Paint is applied in one, two or three layers. Forty minutes is enough to completely dry each layer.

To create a high-quality surface, it is better to apply at least two layers. Wait a week for the overall drying of the multilayer coating.

Enamels are not recommended for interior decoration. Anticorrosion drugs are very toxic, so when working inside other premises you should use a respirator and ensure good ventilation.

The undoubted advantage of primer-enamels is, among other things, its relatively short drying time in various conditions. It saves time spent on work. The disadvantage of this product is a strong unpleasant smell, which persists for quite a long time.

Separate conversation deserves the use of primer-enamels in the automotive field. After all, they create a more durable and reliable coating than other means, and therefore this paintwork material is used most often not to paint the exterior of the car, but its parts,most closely in contact with moisture, mechanical effects of sand, stones, road salt. Soil enamel 3 in 1 is actively used in painting the bottom of the car and the inner parts of its wings. For example, paint in rust 3 in 1 for cars from the company "Novbythim", which demonstrate:

  • effective protection against water and mineral oils;
  • excellent grip;
  • prevent the growth of rust;
  • good hiding power;
  • fast drying when painting;
  • relatively low cost of the product;
  • ease of use;
  • the quality of the pigment, which gives the car surface attractive decorative properties (however, due to the limited range of colors, it is sometimes difficult to achieve a uniform tinting of the body).

To ensure the sustainability of the future coating of automotive parts to atmospheric and mechanical stress and thereby increase its durability, it is recommended to apply at least three layers of the composition.
