Paint rollers: varieties and features of use

 Paint rollers: varieties and features of use

Repair is a long-term event that requires thorough preparation, financial and time costs, as well as the acquisition of theoretical and practical knowledge. Coloring - one of the most common and spectacular tricks when decorating surfaces. A huge variety of colors and shades, methods of application and textures give plenty of fantasy to roam. However, many nuances are hidden behind the seeming simplicity of this finishing option: what paint to choose, how to properly treat the surface, how to apply color, so that the color is even, and annoying drips and unpainted places do not spoil the overall look of the project and the grief of the painter.

For painting walls, you can use different tools, such as brushes, airbrush or roller.

Roller - the golden mean between them. It has a large number of modifications and options for videos. Prokras guarantees almost perfect, moderate paint consumption. Ease of use, ease of care and optimal cost create the perfect combination of "price-quality". In addition, using this device you can apply a decorative pattern, a stencil pattern, and even add texture.

Features of the device

The paint roller is a device of a simple construction consisting of a handle and a frame of a curved shape, on which coloring cylinders with a different surface are mounted. The principle of its action consists in the absorption of various substances when the drum is immersed in them and the transfer of these compounds to the surface being painted.

Advantages of the roller:

  • surface processing speed;
  • the quality of work on the application of the composition;
  • the ability to add additional effects on the treated plane;
  • reducing the amount of consumed materials;
  • big model range.

Progress does not stand still, and today you can easily find such versions of this tool as a roller for painting corners or a roller with an extended handle for painting the ceiling and high facades. Special attention should be paid to rollers with an automatic or piston flow of the coloring substance. This tool is ideal for machining large flat surfaces. It is applied not only if necessary to apply paint, but also for other substances - adhesives, varnishing, liquid wallpaper, primer. The choice of modification of the roller will be almost entirely based on the characteristics of the applied liquid.

When changing the substance, it is only necessary to change the surface of the roller, and the roller is again ready to work. But here it is important to take into account that the roller coat can be made from various materials: fur, foam rubber, polyester, polyacryl, felt, rubber, wool, nylon.

To study all the tricks in the selection of fur coats need to take into account the features of different types of coatings, as well as recommendations for their use.

Kinds

Since the types of rollers in the store are represented by a great variety, it is worth understanding the criteria for their selection.

We define the principle of the roller.

  • Habitual submersible.
  • With a piston paint supply system - its handle comes with a reservoir that can hold half a liter of substance at once. The substance evenly wets the rotating surface of the roller.
  • With automatic dye feed. The device pays for its high cost only in a large space. It is characterized by high performance and efficiency of consumable materials, since this device is a device with a dispenser.

There are two principles of its work:

  • the substance enters through the hose when using the pump;
  • the roller is located in the cavity, and already from it is wetting the working surface of the drum.

By the nature of the work rollers are:

  • for exterior (tighter and reinforced);
  • for interior work (smaller).

The tool is distinguished by the type of coating roller:

  • Fur - universal tool for painting walls. It saves paint, evenly spreads layers, well paints uneven and rough surfaces, is neat in work (there is at least a splash from it). They can be from natural fur or from synthetic analogs (polyacryl, polyamide), which also differ in the length of the villi. There is a rule: the more irregularities, the longer the nap.One "but" - the villi remain on the treated surface.
  • Foam rubber - applicable to a very limited set of paints. It has the lowest cost, but is short-lived, inaccurate (too many splashes), badly stains unevenness, inconvenient in large areas. It is not recommended to paint the walls with them - too many stains. The higher its density, the more durable will be the roller.
  • Velor - used for painting, applying varnishes. Tight staining, but it is a tool for professionals. Work with him inaccurate, characterized by a large number of splashes. The consumption of substances is somewhat increased due to absorption by the surface of the roller. The cost is relatively low.
  • Cotton or cloth - it is possible to use in work with any paints, they are durable, but they spray a lot of material, therefore it is necessary to be careful.
  • Flock and others with a smooth surface - used only for smooth, well-prepared planes. Strong and durable, have low cost.

Painting walls can be carried out not only by painting,but also by drawing a picture or texture with decorating devices with a pattern appearing on their surface.

Rollers are divided by the height of the villi:

  • High pile. Hair height 18-22 mm. Ideal for use with masonry, plastered, concrete surfaces.
  • Average pile Hair height 11-12 mm. Used when working with drywall, wooden areas, as well as with concrete and plaster. Able to absorb paint well. It is possible to carry out work at high humidity of the surrounding space.
  • Short nap. Hair height 5-6 mm. Apply at varnishing and dyeing of wooden and metal surfaces. Paint spend sparingly.

It is necessary to choose the width of the roller. They come in three sizes.

  • Short Size - 8-10 cm., Diameter - 10-15 mm. Suitable for processing small areas of hard-to-reach places.
  • Average. Size - 15-20 cm., Diameter - up to 20-90 mm. Convenient when processing floor, wall, ceiling surfaces.
  • Long. Size - from 25 cm., Diameter - from 80 mm. It is characterized by reinforced fasteners, improved materials nozzles. Positioned as a professional tool.

Rollers are distinguished by the method of location of the roller on the handle. There are models with a pin replaced by a fur coat, frame shock-absorbing.

If in your plans there is no work on painting a huge number of square meters, the construction of the roller will not play a role - you can safely take any.

Which to choose?

If you started painting work, you need to choose the right not only paints and varnishes, but also a certain type of fixtures. When selecting a roller, you should familiarize yourself with the recommendations of manufacturers and sellers about the optimality of one or another option. The best selling rollers for the implementation of interior work are foam. Foam rubber is a material that is absolutely not resistant to aggressive compositions, oil and alkyd paints. The only thing for which it is ideal is water-based paints and adhesives, a primer.

But for work with oil, latex paint and enamels, silicate paints and varnishes fur rollers are perfectly adapted. The shorter the length of the villi, the smoother the surface to be treated.

Also those who are not afraid of aggressive substances, suitable universal velor rollers.They can be used not only for water dispersion, but also for oil, alkyd, two-component paints. For applying these compounds, you can use the nozzles of synthetic, natural wool, threads with polyacryl. To impart texture, it is worth taking a tool with a coating of silicone, a long nap or a rubber pad.

Another important factor when choosing this tool is the quality of the manufacture of the coat: the firmware should be smooth, it is important to have retaining rings. The main thing you need to pay attention to when choosing a roller is the quality of workmanship. There should be no thread sticking out of the fur coat, the firmware should be flat, and there will also be retaining rings. It is also worth checking the presence of the manufacturer's marking.

Surface preparation

Surface preparation for painting is often a longer process than painting itself, but very important. It is necessary to comply with all the technology, without exception, any stages.

  • Remove previous surface coverage. Peeling loose parts of the old paint will lead to a deterioration of the overall look of the work and peeling off the new paint.Whitewashing or water-based paint is removed without much difficulty - plenty of moisten the treated surface, then go with a spatula. Remove residues with a soaked rag. Waterproof paint capricious, for its removal will have to work with a metal brush.
  • Next, you should wet the surface and, after waiting a little, open the window for drafts. The coating should peel off and can be removed with a spatula. Another way: apply wallpaper glue or paste to the old paint, stick newspapers on it, let it dry. Removing a layer of paper, you can remove with it the previous coating. The third way is to remove with a drill, but then a huge layer of dust on the surface cannot be avoided.
  • Plaster the surface if necessary. When removing the top layer, you can assess the condition of the base of the working surface, check for cracks, voids and irregularities, which should be covered with putty.
  • Good sanding with sandpaper all the irregularities. There is a nuance with an oil-adhesive putty - it discolors the water-based paint.
  • Prime with primer and finish primer. To work in a residential area, you can only use an alkyd, acrylic and mineral primer, the rest of the compositions are prohibited.Alkyd blend is absolutely contraindicated for plasterboard and plaster surfaces.
  • Clean the surface from traces of dust, dirt, grease stains. The simplest method is washing with soap and water without abrasive. Plastered surfaces are checked for the possibility of coating - if, when holding a hand, traces of chalk are visible, it is worth re-processing this area with a universal primer.

Work on the preparation of surfaces should be carried out carefully so that the paint lay down more qualitatively and evenly.

Coloring

  • Establishes the order of work on the painting. The first is painting the ceiling, then the walls and floor.
  • Masking tape outline the boundaries of painting.
  • When painting the ceiling should start with the application of the border size of about 5 centimeters without transitions to the wall. If there are ceiling moldings, they are painted secondarily. When painting walls, the border is applied in the corners, near windows and doors. The surface area from one of these places is painted vertically with a width of one meter. Then, overlapping it, paint the next section. Apply paint to the light.

To eliminate streaks and streaks, you should follow the basic rules of painting with a roller.

  • Do not immerse the roller completely in a container with paint. For uniform placement of paint on the roller, you need to use a special grooved pan, rolling a roller over it. This will reduce the consumption of materials.
  • Paint without pressure, smoothly, repeating already passed strokes, from top to bottom, but diagonally.
  • To avoid unnecessary splashing, work is done slowly and smoothly.

The ideal surface contains several layers of paint, each subsequent one is applied only after the area has absorbed the previous layer, and it dries completely. As soon as the roller loses its uniformity, it is replaced.

Tool care

Like any instrument, the rollers need proper care, otherwise it will become one-time and cannot be used in the future. After working with water-soluble substances and paints, simply wash the coat with water, insert the handle and wash it with a damp cloth. If the work was done with more aggressive liquids, the roller should be soaked in kerosene or solvent and then washed with soapy water. Foam rollers can be thrown out.For drying, the rollers are suspended by the skeleton or placed vertically on the handle. In order to avoid creasing the fur coats they are cleaned in a warm room.

In the next video you will find a demonstration of painting with a roller in the technique of "W".
