 How to make a fireplace out of the stove?

Fireplace room can be a decoration for your home. In the modern construction market there is a wide choice of fireplaces in which a long-burning boiler is installed, working, for example, from wood or gas. Such a unit will be able to heat a large room, and the built-in hood will guarantee its safe use. That is why many owners decide to remake the stove, making a fireplace out of it, and then place it in any room. Rough instead of a fireplace is not very modern, so you need to change something.

A stove or fireplace - what's the difference?

To answer this question, you need to define these terms.

Ate to speak in simple language, the stove is a domestic device designed for space heating. It absorbs heat from the fuel (wood, coal) burning in it, then gradually gives it away, maintaining a comfortable temperature in the room. To maintain heat, the unit must be heated as needed. A good stone stove can maintain an optimum temperature for up to 12 hours. Inside it, smoke channels are installed so that maximum heat can be maintained. Hot flue gases emitted during the combustion of firewood, flowing along the walls of the smoke channels and coming into contact with them, give up their heat to the material of the furnace.

There are a number of elements that are unique to stoves, but they distinguish it from the fireplace:

  • A stove firebox that always closes with a cast iron or steel door when it is heated. This is necessary to prevent smoke from entering the room.
  • The ashpit located under the firebox and associated with it. When the furnace is fired, the ash pan door is opened, thereby blowing air into the firebox.
  • The presence in the bottom of the firebox grate for air penetration from the ash pan to the firebox.

Although the fireplace appeared not so long ago, it has already gained popularity.

Fireplaces can be divided into two types:

  • open;
  • closed.

Open fireplaces

Such fireplaces are among the traditional. Most often they are used for interior decoration, without carrying a heating capacity. This type of fireplace can only warm people sitting next to it. His firebox is located either directly in the wall or in a special attachment to the ceiling. It is a small indentation.

Typically, such fireplaces are decorated with a grill or low glass, so they require constant and close attention to themselves in order to avoid a situation that threatens fire. Also in such structures firewood burns very quickly.

Closed fireplaces

Unlike open-type models, these fireplaces have heat-resistant glass, which completely closes the firebox, which prevents the spread of sparks. One of the advantages of such a unit is that it is able to heat the premises qualitatively, since it has a high percentage of efficiency. Installing such a fireplace is more expensive. This is due to the more stringent requirements that apply to the chimney, the necessary insulation, as well as other factorsaffecting the complexity of the design. However, this object will soon justify the money spent on it.

Rework features

Starting to remake the furnace in the fireplace, the first thing you need to assess the condition of the chimney - this will be the key to safety. It is worth noting that the unit is built strictly on an individual project. Therefore, the next step will be the drafting of the project.

It is also important to assess the condition of the furnace and the foundation. If all is well, then you can proceed to the next stage.

The simplest version of the alteration will be the transformation of the furnace into a decorative fireplace. It does not take much time and effort.

The necessary materials and tools will serve:

  • new chimney;
  • bricks;
  • masonry mortar;
  • putty knife;
  • Master OK;
  • several bags of cement;
  • enough clay;
  • level;
  • finishing material (for example, tile);
  • glass door optional.

One of the necessary requirements for the fireplace is a mandatory gap between the base and the foundation of the house, which must be completely covered with sand.

At alteration it is necessary to observe the conditions shown to a fireplace.

It is important to check the chimney pipe:

  • its height must be at least 7 m (preferably more);
  • section - more than 13x25 cm;
  • The depth of the firebox should be about 50 cm, but not less.

Inside, the firebox must be laid out with refractory bricks. So that the soot does not constantly settle on the door, it is necessary to note the special channels. They will circulate the air along the door, which will not allow dirt to smudge the door.

When all stages are completed, then the finishing stage begins. Here, of course, everything is individual. The choice of materials depends on the personal tastes and preferences of the owners, as well as on the interior style. The main materials that go to the course for decoration: stone, tile, tiles. Undoubtedly, a stone-trimmed fireplace will look very impressive and chic.

How to make your own hands?

This stage of the construction of the fireplace is more difficult. First you need to dismantle the old furnace, inspect the foundation. If necessary, it must be leveled and then waterproofed. Otherwise, moisture rising from the ground on the foundation will reach the base of the fireplace, which will lead to its destruction.The dimensions of the base structure should not exceed the dimensions of the foundation.

Mortar for fireplace should be of high quality. The durability and quality of the whole structure depends on it. Plasticity and normal fat content of the solution - the main criteria by which it must be selected in the store or prepare yourself. From too greasy solution in the structure, cracks may appear, and a dryish composition threatens to crumble after drying.

The masonry of each level occurs under the control level measurements. The work requires a refractory brick, from which is formed the fire chamber of the fireplace. It is important to know that when building the walls of such a unit between them and the firebox, there must be an air space to avoid destruction of the furnace. This is explained by the fact that the different types of bricks used in the work (chamotte and red) expand in different ways at high temperatures.

If you plan to build a fireplace with a door, then the place for it should be left on the second row. It is necessary to take into account that the joints in this case are made in the middle of the brick row.

To avoid hard work with the glass door, you must remove the glass before installing it. The oven tape is attached to the sash with the usual twist.To put it in place, you will need an installation tape. It is necessary to fasten it to the door, and then make four (minimum) fastening assembly. Steel rivets in this case will be the most reliable fastening.

When the fasteners are ready, you can knead the solution. It is necessary to prepare a homogeneous mass without lumps. To do this, use the construction mixer.

The furnace must be wrapped around the perimeter of the asbestos cord, well moistened in the prepared solution. The door for the firebox must also be wound with such a cord. For a perfect result and create uniformity, you need to make a few turns, and then tap the winding with a rubber mallet.

After these manipulations, you can install the sash in place. For greater reliability, it is fixed with dowels on ceramics. Gaps that form suddenly can be closed with asbestos cords soaked in cement mortar. A flat screwdriver will help in this case.

For a solution to seize, usually a couple of days is enough. After this period, a test fire is made. If at the same time the places which are passing a smoke are found, then they are covered with cement mortar.

Beautiful examples in the interior

Russian stove does not look organically in all interiors. Often such a structure requires major changes. To alter it is not so difficult if you follow our recommendations. Converted stove is suitable for any room.

Separately, it is worth to highlight such interior styles:

  • classic;
  • vintage;
  • loft;
  • country music;
  • retro.
