How much does the cinder block weigh?
Building materials have been trying since very ancient times to reduce the cost and simplify use. But in addition to financial and geometric performance, strength and thermal conductivity, you need to know the total mass. Only by it can we judge the applicability of certain products in a particular case, the optimal options for performing tasks.
Why do you need to know the weight?
The obvious answer - “for the correct calculation of the foundation” - does not exhaust the entire depth of the problem. It is important to remember that the weight of the structure is inversely proportional to its strength. And even with the complete identity of the materials, with high quality workmanship, the difference still remains extremely significant to achieve the result.So, when using the classic type of cinder blocks (indeed, consisting of metallurgical slag), the gravity is determined by the size of its particles. When using predominantly large slag, the construction is made easier, it becomes less strong, but more economical in terms of heat consumption.
Slag of small size is manifested, respectively, not only by the weighting of the product. It contributes to its enhanced strength. But at the same time thermal characteristics deteriorate. Adding quartz sand instead of part of small particles of slag, practiced in some cases, increases the strength of the structure, because the maximum load is concentrated on a large filler. Of course, this technique inevitably affects the severity of the applied design.
Composition and properties
Among the artificially produced building stones, cinder blocks are distinguished by the fact that they were once made only with filling with slags, hence the name. But today this design has become much more diverse in its parameters.
So, in the production of slag blocks today can be used such fillers as:
- crushed granite;
- glass break;
- crushed brick;
- expanded clay;
- volcanic ash and a number of other substances.
The advantages of using blocks are:
- long period of operation;
- flame resistance;
- relatively weak thermal conductivity;
- fast construction;
- the possibility of obtaining parts in artisanal conditions;
- wide range of geometric solutions.
But we must not forget that the cinder blocks almost do not quench the noise and are easily soaked with water. Thermal conductivity of solid structures is not always satisfactory. Such elements are poorly suited for pulling pipelines and cable lines.
Because for the most part they are used:
- for garages;
- for summer kitchens;
- for other ancillary facilities;
- as a finishing and decorative material.
The manufacture of cinder blocks for the construction of specific facilities is widespread; Often they do their own hands. Because the value of 1 piece can be very different depending on the need. The unofficial standard, that is, considered to be universal slag blocks have a size of 39 cm in length, 18.8 cm in height and 19 cm in width. But the mass is influenced not only by the space occupied, there is an important difference between full-bodied and empty blocks inside.
Emptiness is created purposefully, because they allow:
- reduce the weight of the finished structure;
- reduce heat loss;
- save materials;
- keep at the same time at a decent level of structural strength.
In some blocks a pair of square cavities is provided - this means that air accounts for 40% of the block volume. Least of all this figure (28%), when placed inside a number of slots. If four slits are created in the form of a rectangle, or 2 or 3 round, the voids account for 30%. More accurate characteristics can be determined if you consider the material used and scope. So, corpulent slag stones are intended for formation of the bases, also they can be used in the bearing walls and in the first floors. Walls inside houses and partitions are constructed from hollow structures. There are cladding products that duplicate the appearance of a variety of materials and are designed for decoration. Partitioning cinder blocks are very light (both in general and in terms of one cube), are inexpensive and create minimal stress on the base.
"Ripped" blocks differ in the same kind of surface as the broken brick.Such products are mostly needed for decorative purposes. Decorating columns, fences and gables are formed from colored parts, which add chalk or crushed brick. As for the size, the above size 39x19x18.8 cm is typical only for ordinary structures. For three-quarter cinder blocks, the norm is a proportion of 29x19x18.8 cm.
The half-block type has two faces of 19 cm each, and the partition walls are 59 or 39 cm long and 9 cm wide. Designed for the chimney, the structure has two 39 cm faces. If a block of 20x20x40 cm is made of sand-cement, its weight increases to 29 kg. It is unacceptable to use slag stones, which differ in length and width from typical dimensions by more than 3 mm.
For deviations in height, a less rigid barrier is provided - 4 mm. But it is also impossible to use in construction blocks of any size, with concrete sinks deeper than 0.4 cm, as well as growths and excavations above 0.2 cm. The maximum allowable level of chips on the outer and inner faces is no more than 0.5 cm from 0 , 5 m.All these circumstances are important to consider - along with the mass - when selecting cinder blocks and obtaining them independently.
It is categorically unacceptable the situation when, striving to maintain compliance with dimensions and severity at any cost, lower the quality.
The cost of finished blocks is determined not only by their mass (more precisely, the number of voids and the format of these voids). The specific technological parameters are taken into consideration, as well as the manufacturer’s popularity and the distance of transportation. Knowledge of the exact composition and its influence on the severity of structures allows you to order the most suitable products and monitor their compliance with the requirements.
Important: when used in the production of blast furnace slag, it is not recommended to use blocks in the construction of residential premises and animal housing.
The only area of their use - secondary outbuildings. It is necessary to take into account that even the heaviest and durable products are fragile. When unloading, storage and use should protect them from falls, from strong shocks. The seams need to strive to make as thin as possible. Their excessive thickness opens up a convenient way for frost.
