Woven carpets

 Woven carpets

Whatever the flooring in the living rooms, without a carpet it is impossible to create an atmosphere of home warmth and comfort, as well as to achieve completeness in the composition of interior details. Often, this accessory is a key element of the style, combining disparate details of the situation.

In the best way, this task is handled by smooth woven kilim carpets with a bright interior personality, which can fit into a different design style.

Appearance history

Kilim is a woven double-sided hand-woven carpet, long loved by nomads. These woven products were used not only for decoration, but for household needs: to protect the floor from abrasion, to wrap goods, as a cloth for livestock. For the nomadic tribes, the kilim was a kind of house amulet.In ancient times, people believed that a woven pattern protects the home from evil spirits and protects loved ones.

Carpet fabrication technology originates in ancient Persia (now the territory of Iran). The first mention of them in the chronicle sources is 2500 years old. The oldest product with the image of wild animals, made by carpet craftsmen 2,000 years ago, is today stored in the Hermitage. From Iran, the Kilims migrated to the countries of Europe and came into use by many residents. Today, these woven carpets are the subject of life and decoration of the interior of any home.

Special features

Kilims have a number of features, each such product:

  • has a smooth texture that makes it practical and easy to clean;
  • available to a wide range of buyers, have an acceptable price category;
  • fits perfectly into the interior design, adding to it an oriental touch;
  • hypoallergenic: even allergy sufferers can afford it.

Weaving method

Modern technology for the manufacture of woven cloths remained true to ancient traditions. As in the distant past, today they are created by hands on special machines. Wool, occasionally silk, is used as materials.On the wooden frames of the machines, the warp threads are stretched, after which they begin to weave the product with thick stitches. The cross thread is alternated with threads of contrasting shades to create an intricate ornament.

The equipment resembles a system for making tapestries (in French, "tapestries").

Thanks to a special technique, it is difficult to find carpets with identical patterns. Each kilim is individual, corresponds to the creative imagination and aesthetic taste of the master: it is not for nothing that in the East making the manufacture of a carpet is rarely called a craft, calling it art. Due to the forced tearing off of the transverse threads in the finished web, there are gaps at the junction of two colors. Visually, they are difficult to notice, although you can look at the product to the light if you wish.

Sometimes in rulers there are mats of a contrasting plan, in which the share threads of one color, and the weft threads of another. Such kilim is called multicolored. The cost of these products is slightly lower: this is due to the brevity of the pattern. The figures and ornaments of these carpeting can be not only woven: carpet weavers often embroider them on the finished canvas. The pattern in this case is richer and more complex than in the classical variation,there are no gaps at the joints of neighboring colors. Embroidered models on the front side have some rough edges.

Traditional patterns

For kilims is characterized by ancient ethnic ornament. Initially, when oriental carpets had only a household purpose, the subjects of the drawings reflected the life principles and traditions of ordinary people. These woven items served as home charms if there were images of totem animals in the ornament.

These carpets are unique in that they are distinguished by the diversity of ethnic groups, which, through craftsmanship, expressed their national symbols on carpet canvases:

  • For Iranian products The ornament is characterized by scarab beetles, geometric figures and precious stones. All this is done in juicy shades of pink, ruby, emerald, blue or ivory.
  • Caucasian models Carpets always look solemn and have a decoration in the form of a medallion located in the center of the carpet. Carpet makers of the Caucasus traditionally portray an eagle on woven items, which symbolizes fortitude and insight.
  • Anatolian carpets They are famous for such ornaments as the female image (the symbol of the birth of a new life), or the horns of a ram (the symbol of masculinity, generating power and creative energy). Often in the prints of these canvases there is a dual symbol, similar to yin-yang.
  • Turkish designs Kilim was originally used as a litter for prayers, so coarse fiber is used as a carpet material. Carpets are characterized by a pattern on the edges and a monotonous central part. Favorite shades are ruby, azure, juicy yellow and brown.
  • Berber Kilims its ornament more reminiscent of the carpet. The homeland of these rugs is the capital of Morocco, Rabat, therefore another name for woven products is “Rabat”. They are laconic, have insignificant weight and compact parameters. Rabat kilims are very practical, easy to clean and maintain.
  • The most diverse in terms of ornaments and decorations Bulgarian and Greek models carpets. Floral motifs, jewels, a vine, and silhouettes of people are woven into the patterns.

A distinctive feature of carpets is the use of rich shades of thread: yellow, red, orange.Carpet makers love to depict silhouettes of birds and animals in the ornament, and occasionally abstract geometric shapes.

Weaving is mainly done by women, using natural wool in their work.

How to choose?

Choosing a woven carpet is a creative task. To simplify it, it is worth taking note of several recommendations (we assume that we will put the carpet on the floor).

The choice of a carpet product can occur in two scenarios:

  • there is already a ready-made interior design (or its concept), to which the carpet is selected;
  • You saw the sale of kilim, which sunk into your soul, no matter how it fits the style of the room.

It is impossible to call unequivocally the right way: both options have the right to exist.

But it is worth considering how to act in each case:

  • If you pick up the product to the interior, take into account the color of the main surfaces (walls, flooring, furniture upholstery, curtains). The leading shade of the carpet should not repeat them, otherwise the unique ethnic accessory will be lost on the general background. The calmer and more concise the color palette of the room, the more colorful and richer the kilim should be.
  • In the second case, the carpet needs “support” with other accessories. The most relevant for these purposes are pillows in oriental style, selected in the same color scheme or soft padded stool with a cover made of a material with a similar texture.

How to care?

Most often, smooth homespun carpet is a decoration of the floor, so it is cleaned like regular models.

Kilims do not cause much trouble in matters of care, but it is worth considering some factors:

  • do not use aggressive cleaners for models of natural fabrics;
  • it is necessary to exclude cleaning with brushes with rigid pile;
  • hot water for carpets is destructive;
  • stains must be removed immediately after the appearance;
  • The main rule of long life is careful handling.
