Roof parapet: what is it and how is it arranged?

During the construction of any building, special attention is paid to its roof and all that is on it. An integral part of the roof is the parapet. What it is and how it works is not all know, but it is this detail that makes a person's stay at the height safe.

Features and Functions

More recently, parapets on buildings performed a single function — aesthetic. Now these devices are mandatory attributes of the roof, and this rule is spelled out in the relevant State Standards.

The main objective of each type of fencing is to protect the person on the roof from falling. The secondary function is to protect the building from precipitation and any climatic influences. Types and materials of fences

To create parapets, a variety of materials are used: metal, reinforced concrete blocks, bricks and solid concrete. In order to avoid the damaging effects of precipitation, the structure is closed with galvanized metal profiles or concrete slabs. The profile surface can be horizontal, single-slope or dual-slope.

Modern construction provides two types of parapets:

  • metal parapet grilles and hubcaps;
  • brick fencing.

Protective panels (aprons) for the parapet are made from metal sheets with a thickness of 0.3-0.7 mm. They may differ in design and mounting options.

Installation according to SNiP

According to the SNiP, the parapet is installed on a roof of a house with a height of more than 10 m with a ramp slope reaching 12%. If the slope of the roof is more than 12%, then the fence can be installed on the roof of the building with a height of less than 10 m.

The minimum height of the parapet is 45 cm. The maximum value is also regulated by the SNiP and is regulated by the figure of 1.2 m, not more.

It should be remembered that if the roofing material is put without the use of a support, then a cavity is formed in the interface area of ​​the planes. As a result, the risk of mechanical damage to the soft roof will increase, its tightness will be broken.

To prevent such problems from happening, a side wall at an angle of 45 is constructed between the parapet and the roofing base.
