Floor paint: types and colors

The modern market pleases us with a huge variety of paints and varnishes that are suitable for various types of coating. A large niche is occupied by odorless, quick-drying paints with high wear resistance. Their popularity is due to environmental friendliness, as well as a decrease in time for finishing and painting.

When choosing a floor paint, you must rely on where the floor is located. (indoors or outside), what material it is made of (wood or concrete), how it will be used. On the features of floor paint will tell our article.

Features: pros and cons

Floor paint has certain advantages and disadvantages that must be considered when choosing.

Pros:

  • quick drying and the absence of a strong odor allows you to not leave the room at the time of staining;
  • reduced repair time;
  • no toxic elements, no need to use protective equipment;
  • consumes a small amount of coloring material;
  • UV resistance;
  • antiseptic properties;
  • moisture resistance;
  • resistance to fading.

Minuses:

  • in case of poor initial finishing, irregularities can be seen;
  • from the villi of the brush there are traces;
  • if the paint is applied with a long period of time, then traces of the borders may be noticeable.

These minuses are typical mainly for thick paint. To make it thinner, you can use a special diluent, but before using it, you must read the instructions.

Kinds

Depending on the composition, floor paints are divided into several groups:

  • Oil paint. Compared to other types of floor paints, oil is not the best option. Although it has many advantages of modern coatings, it has significant drawbacks. Drying oil, which is the basis, has a high viscosity, and this increases the drying time. To reduce the duration of complete hardening of such a paint, you must use a well-evaporating solvent.Also, linseed oil has a certain aroma, so oil paint can not be considered a material without odor.
  • Acrylic enamel. Consists of acrylic resin and a water solvent, and the pigment gives color. Treats natural eco-friendly paints.

This composition gives certain properties:

  1. Elasticity and strength.
  2. Water resistant
  3. Lack of smell and fast drying.

This paint can be used for painting as a concrete base, and wood. It can be applied to the old layer of paint, but do not do this if it has irregularities. In this case, the new layer will only emphasize defects. For painting wooden floor paint product is applied in several layers. And in order to reduce paint consumption before painting it is necessary to treat the base with a primer.

  • Alkyd enamel. The quality is similar to acrylic enamel and is ideal for rooms with high humidity. It is well absorbed and protects from moisture, suitable for concrete and wooden floors. But the disadvantages of this coating are significant: it has a sharp smell and is not fire retardant, fireproof.Of the advantages can be distinguished resistance to chemicals and the fact that enamel is antistatic.

Alkyd enamel is more suitable for concrete pavement, and for wood emitting compounds PF-223, PF-253, PF-126.

  • Polyurethane paint. Polyurethane enamel is popular because of its unusual texture, which appears after drying and resembles crimped silk. This paint has a durable color, it is odorless, quick-drying, wear-resistant. It is used to cover concrete, wood and even paving slabs. The package must indicate for which surfaces the paint is intended.

Among the drawbacks it should be noted toxicity, and in certain conditions, and explosive. When painting it is necessary to make sure that the room is well ventilated.

  • Latex paint. A feature of this paint and varnish product is the ability to block defects and microcracks in the floor. Latex coating dries in an hour, it is resistant to wear, creates a glossy shine on the floor surface. Such a number of advantages justifies the high cost of paint, and for cheaper types add artificial substitutes for rubber.

Colors

Today, manufacturers of paint and varnish products have a wide range of colors of paints. But even if it is impossible to find the desired shade, for example, you need to get an olive color, you can try to mix different colors. But this method is unlikely to be needed, since it is possible to purchase ready-made paint from a light shade to black.

For industrial premises or floors outside the house, green paint is popular, and for living rooms golden brown, red-brown, wenge. To choose the right color of the floor, you need to focus on the colors of furniture and doors. There are two combinations: in one color or contrast. Which style suits you best depends on each specific case and wishes.

What is better to choose?

The self-leveling floor has, used indoors, has a smooth surface and a beautiful appearance, but if it is not painted, it will become very dirty and harder to clean. In addition, staining gives protection from damage, and also provides anti-skid.

To paint a bulk floor, alkidny and polyurethane structures are most often applied. These coatings enhance the characteristics of the coating and highlight its beauty.

Since plywood is prone to cracking due to moisture, for this type of floor it is necessary to select water-based paint. For this ideal acrylic coating, which will provide protection from moisture. This paint is suitable for all types of plywood, including OSB, particleboard, fiberboard, OSB.

If you want to transform the appearance of the room, you can paint the linoleum, which is already worn out. Before painting it is necessary to determine the composition of linoleum, so as not to spoil it. The quality of linoleum depends on the thickness of the layers and the thicker it is, the better. The most common paints are oil, alkyd and acrylic, acrylic coatings are the most popular.

Tiles are stained for several reasons:

  • interior renovation;
  • masking of defects.

Most often, tiles are used in the bathroom, in the toilet, dressing room or kitchen, so you should choose from acrylic paints that will provide moisture resistance. Acrylic coating is also suitable for ceramic tiles.

It is not recommended to paint the cork floor, as the material itself is not intended for processing. If you still want to add brightness to the floor or protect it from fading, it is best to use a transparent varnish.

For the cement floor it is worth choosing alkyd coatings, especially since such floors are often present on the open porch or stairs and are subject to physical impact.

How long does it dry?

The drying time of the paint depends on its type and features, the air temperature in the room and the condition of the painted surface also play an important role. On average, acrylic paint needs 16 hours to dry, but if you need to apply several layers, the difference between them should be 4 hours. Oil coating dries for about 1-2 days, polyurethane - up to two weeks.

Consumption

If you use brushes, then a greater amount of paint will be consumed than if you use a spray or roller. But to paint the corners it is still necessary to take the brush, because the roller will not paint the surface completely. An average of 200-300 grams of paintwork is consumed per 1 m2.

Brands

Nowadays there are a huge number of manufacturers of paints and varnishes, but the Finnish company Tikkurila stands out in particular. The company has been on the world market for 150 years and constantly improves the properties of its products. In the assortment of Tikkurila you can find quality paints, varnishes, primers and other materials.The company manufactures products for a variety of surfaces: wood, concrete, metal and others.

In addition to these advantages, paints and varnishes of this company have proven themselves with the following parameters:

  • high wear resistance;
  • no odor and drying speed;
  • resistance to temperature changes.

Prices for Tikkurila's product may be higher than for counterparts from other manufacturers, but this is justified by excellent quality, years of experience, the ability of paintwork materials to protect any surface and transform it.

How to care?

Some tips:

  • In order for the floors to maintain a well-groomed appearance, it is necessary to carry out a wet cleaning 3-4 times a week, a highly contaminated floor can be washed with ammonia added to the water. In order not to spoil the coating, it is impossible to wash the surfaces painted with oil paints with soda and soap solution. To add shine, you can rub the floor with vegetable oil, and remove the excess with a cotton cloth.
  • It removes dust and dirt from a hard-to-reach place. Thus, maintaining the floor in its pure form does not require much time and effort.

When caring for a concrete floor, you need to follow certain rules in order not to scratch the surface and prevent moisture absorption:

  • Before you start wet cleaning, you need to remove the dust with a mop with a dry and soft non-abrasive head. This will not spoil the painted surface. It is better to wash the floor in small areas, first treat it with a wet cloth and immediately wipe dry with a soft cotton cloth. As a detergent, you can use the usual dishwashing detergent diluted in water.
  • If the floor is outside, for example, on the veranda, you can pour it with running water from a hose and then wipe it off. Before this, it is necessary to clean the surface of debris with a hard broom, preferably with plastic bristles.
  • If stains have formed on the concrete, they can be removed with detergent or bleach. Washing powder should be kept on the spot for about 10 minutes, and bleach 2-3 minutes. Then, using a nylon brush dipped in warm water, carefully wipe the desired areas. These actions, if necessary, can be performed until the spot disappears completely.
