All the subtleties and technology of grinding wood floor

Sand the floor with one goal - to create the most even surface. But the elimination of height differences, irregularities and defects in different cases may not be the same.

And all these circumstances must be considered before the start of work, in order to stock up on a proper tool.

Features and specifications

Wood flooring is always a complex structure. Even in the process of installing completely new parts often have problems. With the help of grinding succeeds:

  • give the surface a visually even appearance;
  • cope with external defects;
  • remove dirt, the former paintwork;
  • prepare the base for a new painting.

Regardless of whether hand tools or electrical equipment are used when working, the basic technique is the same — the use of a fine-grained grinding head.Such an approach will make it possible to achieve success even in the presence of defects of 0.3 cm in size. It is impossible to properly prepare for the finishing of wooden floors, if there is no scissors on hand. They cut off the sandpaper of the desired size is much easier than a knife and more accurately than tear off manually.

When to grind is not required?

With the undoubted power of treating the floor with the help of grinding tools, there are a number of cases when they cannot help. Tears of strips, boards or lamellas exceeding 7 mm, are unlikely to be able to be puttied, or sealed with sealant. The problem is solved due to the reassembly of floors with simultaneous processing of all parts. As an option, change the degraded area or drive the bars exactly the size of the gap. And only after the gap is eliminated, can the floor be sanded.

In addition, you should not resort to sanding, if the aisles are worn 0.4 cm and deeper, because to align the surface you will need to remove too much wood on the rest of the floor. It is better to replace the worn part with a new one, so it will be easier. A grinder does not help eliminate floor swelling, mold and rot nests, deep scratches and dents.

What is needed for work?

Choosing tools, evaluate first of all the area that will need to be polished, as well as your material capabilities. Manual work is carried out using:

  • rolls or sheets of sandpaper (the required volume can not be predicted, it is determined directly during operation);
  • graters made of plastic or wood;
  • scraper (manual cycle), which will clean the previous coating, or the most severe pollution.

It does not matter whether grinding is manual or mechanized, be sure to wear a respirator and goggles.

To grind a wooden floor with the help of machines is much easier and more comfortable. Most often for this purpose, used tape or drum machines with a grit of the abrasive part of 40-80 units. There are no particular differences between these two subtypes, both of them are available in a wide range - 220 or 380 V, with a built-in dust collector or component for connecting a separate construction vacuum cleaner.

The surface grinding machine can have one or three discs, it is designed to perform final processing and intermediate alignment of varnish layers. It is easier to work with one disk., and options with three working parts open up additional opportunities for trained craftsmen.

The boot sander allows you to vary the caliber of grains from 40 to 320, helps to grind the floor at the most inconvenient points (under the batteries and heating pipes, on the stairs, near the wall itself). Angle devices are represented by the famous grinder, vibration and orbital polishing systems, as well as small household appliances. All of them are able to work both roughly and subtly. In a difficult position, they can also handle minor areas.

Surface preparation

To grind the floor as it should be, it is not enough to have good equipment and be able to use it. It will be necessary to thoroughly prepare the surface itself. Newly laid flooring should be inspected - whether the knots have fallen off, whether all the strips are glued firmly, whether the surface has been chipped, or the normal width of the clearances has been observed. A floor that has served for more than one year almost inevitably has deformations. Be sure to check and whether it is well kept separate parts.

Small problems are removed with parquet glue and putty. Instead of store fillers, you can take a mixture of PVA with sawdust fines. But the elastic grout and sealant will not be able to reach the desired level of hardness and only create problems when you use the tool. By the way, any steel fastener must be not less than 0.3 cm deep into the surface.

The more layers of wood will be removed, the greater the depth of equipment safety.

Rough processing

The first step of grinding itself is scoring. It involves the passage on the surface of an abrasive material with a grain size of 40 or 60 units. Professional systems not only remove irregularities and eliminate scratches, but also provide pressure control. The base is covered with tape or glued strip, then proceed to deep processing. Its methods are determined by the coating used:

  • Deck flooring is better to work on the course of the fibers from one wall to another. It is allowed to go across the technology only on condition that the machine will turn at the vertical fences;
  • if the parquet is laid on the “fir-tree” system, it is necessary to move the device diagonally, trying to evenly cover the surface.When the coating is placed on the principle of braids, shields or installation was multidirectional, the movement goes crosswise, no areas are allocated. Art parquet can be polished only in a circle, curled up in a spiral.

Grinding produces a lot of dust, so you need to do it in a tightly closed room. Once again, the window or door should not be opened. From time to time, see that with an abrasive nozzle: if it is worn out, you need to immediately install a new one, otherwise even the best equipment will leave lanes and skip sections. When the main part of the work is over, they take circular nozzles and pass the grinder through the corners.

Immediately adjust the pressure the drum will exert on the surface.otherwise the quality of the work or the engine of the grinding system will suffer.

Fine finish

In order for a smooth alignment to give a good result, it is required to use surface grinders with circles of grit from 60 to 120 units. In the most difficult cases, discs of 180 and 240 units are used. Fine grinding, like coarse, should occur along the fibers, and the nozzles also change as they wear out.Narrow and complex shaped areas are refined using angle grinders or boots. Grit circles retained. When work is completed, the surface is vacuumed or wiped with a soft cloth.

All suspended particles and dust must be completely cleaned.

The leveled surface must be puttied. Selection of a ready-made paste-like preparation or filling liquid is a matter of personal taste, but experts believe that liquid products are better. Combined with sawdust, they acquire the appropriate shade, flow into all the voids of the old floor and do not crack. It is recommended to apply the composition with a spatula of stainless material: so the pores are filled and fine fibers are cut off.

Before painting, soaking with oil a tree or applying wax on it, required final polishing. Start it after the putty dries and cures. It is recommended to use parquet lacquer as a coating.

Recommendations

There are a number of subtleties that need to be taken into account when working with your own hands in order to avoid mistakes and get a level floor without flaws.So, usually the grinding machine makes four runs with emery No. 40, then turns No. 60, 80 and 120 come. When replacing an abrasive, the motor is muffled, and it can be stopped and started only when moving, otherwise the floor will be covered with traces that can hardly be removed.

Thin coatings are trimmed with the exception of one of the passages (most often from No. 40 they immediately go to No. 80 and 120). The initial coat of varnish can be applied on the same day when grinding is finished.

When it still goes, dust collection devices can reduce its spread, but it can’t be completely avoided. Therefore, one should work not just behind closed doors, but curtain them with a thick wet cloth. It should be borne in mind that grinding devices on electrical charges can absorb up to 2.5 kW / h, so you should take care to protect the wiring from the load and starting current consumption.

Each next track should go to the previous one by a few centimeters. Carefully watch where the working plane moves so that it does not damage the power cable. If the abrasive surface slows down dramatically, simply reduce the pressure.If there is no effect, you must immediately stop the machine and deal with the problem in more detail. Observing all these principles and taking into account the nuances, you can perform the polishing of a painted or unpainted floor in the shortest possible time and get the best result.
